During the second week of September, Fulbright España held its orientation for our cohort. The Fulbright Commission in Spain is one of the largest in the world, typically fourth or fifth in terms of number of grants.

The orientation sessions took place at the Instituto Internacional, which was started in 1892 to facilitate educational opportunities for women in Spain and the United States. Nowadays, the Institute offers a full lineup of language classes, invited lectures, seminars, workshops, cultural activities, etc. There were several receptions for us throughout the week, including one at Escuela Tecnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales, where we met the Spanish Fulbright Alumni Association for the first time. A celebratory reception took place in the Institute’s gardens on Wednesday evening.

Walking into the hotel (but first, getting lost along the way), I was anxious. I think most people were hesitant at first, but who wouldn’t be when you’re meeting some of the alleged “best and brightest” for the first time?! The trepidation disappeared as I quickly learned from other’s experiences, interests, and, of course, a passion for Spain. Several times throughout orientation I found myself in disbelief that I was actually a part of such an amazing group of people!
